Type of article: Article

Summary

A PARTIAL ICE STORAGE SYSTEM TO HANDLE PEAK LOADS OVER 3 TO 4 HOURS AND LOCATED WITHIN A BUILDING AT ROOF LEVEL IS DESCRIBED. MULTIPLE TANKS ARE USED WITH A SECONDARY REFRIGERANT COMPRISING AN 80/20% ETHYLENE GLYCOL/WATER SOLUTION CIRCULATING THROUGH ICE MAKING COILS. WHEN COOLING IS REQUIRED THE WARM GLYCOL SOLUTION IS PUMPED THROUGH THE COILS MELTING THE ICE. THE OPERATION OF THE PLANT IS DESCRIBED IN SOME DETAIL AND BOTH CAPITAL AND RUNNING COSTS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN A CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM. G.R.S.
