Heat and mass transfer characteristics of graphite-salt blocks in chemical heat pumps.

Summary

In the research, the authors investigated the material aspects of graphite-salt blocks manufactured following IMPEX patent. Expanded graphite powders were prepared by heating expandable graphite powders intercalated with sulfuric acid. Porous graphite matrices were fabricated by pressing expanded graphite powders. These matrices had good thermal conductivities and Darcy's permeabilities. IMPEX blocks were completed by immersing graphite matrices in salt solution under vacuum, followed by vacuum drying. Uniform distribution of salt was confirmed and the porosities and average radii of IMPEX blocks were examined as a function of bulk density and weight fraction of graphite.
