Summary
Detailed simulation models are essential when designing and optimizing next-generation heat pump systems that employ low-GWP refrigerants. Experimental results indicate the necessity to optimize and redesign the heat exchangers for R454C to improve its performance when working as a replacement in a residential R410A heat pump. In this paper, discretized heat exchanger models were used to conduct parametric studies on the influence of various geometric parameters on Finned tube refrigerant to air heat exchangers. Numerical results demonstrate that refrigerant to air flow pattern and heat exchanger size are two key parameters for optimizing heat exchangers using high-glide zeotropic mixtures (e.g., R454C). Based on the experimental results and parametric studies, one pair of soft-optimized AHU and ODU heat exchangers were generated and simulated in a validated detailed steady-state heat pump model. Simulation results show that the soft-optimized heat pump could increase system net capacity by 16.1% and system COP by 10.7% in cooling mode. Additionally, the soft-optimized system consumes 10% less charge than the baseline system in cooling mode, addressing the charge difference issue of baseline system.
