Heat pipe research and applications in Taiwan.

Author(s) : SHYU R. J.

Summary

Taiwan started heat pipe research as early as the 1970s. Both academic institutions and research organisations are involved in research activities. Various kinds of heat pipe were made and studied, including wicked pipes, thermosiphon heat pipes, variable conductance heat pipes, capillary pumped loops, and thermosiphon loops. The applications of heat pipes are mainly in waste heat recovery in the petrochemical, paper, steel and textile industries. In recent years, a miniature heat pipe and a micro heat pipe have been developed to cool the central processing unit of laptop personal computers. The present paper will introduce part of the research and development experience as well as applications of heat pipes in Taiwan over the last 20 years.
