Summary

About 10 million systems have been installed worldwide, and around one million are added each year. In Japan and the United States about 12% of all the heat demand in commercial buildings is met by heat pumps. But even in "cool" markets, such as Sweden and the United Kingdom, heat pumps can cover up to 7% of heat demand. This article provides a brief review of the main technologies and applications, the current market status and factors and notes some relevant developments. In the "country blocks" around the article the situation in a number of countries (including Switzerland, Japan, Norway, the Netherlands and the United States) is highlighted, with illustrations of some practical problems.
