Horizontal tube absorber performance as a function of tube spacing and flow rate: experimental and predicted outcomes.

Author(s) : WASSENAAR R. H.

Summary

Conventional absorption heat pumps still use shell-and-tube apparatus for the absorber or generator. The study compares experimental and theoretical results for an absorber consisting of a vertical row of 10 horizontal tubes, that were cooled in a cross-flow/counterflow way. The model is a solution of the differential equations for simultaneous heat and mass transfer in a flat vertical falling film. To make the results applicable to any mixture or geometry, they are presented in a non-dimensional form. The measurements were obtained at four tube spacings: 0, 3, 15, and 24 mm. For a tube spacing larger than 3 mm the correspondence between predicted and measured results was not influenced by the kind of flow between the tubes. An increase in tube spacing from 15 to 24 mm had no significant effect.
