Summary

PAFT, the program for alternative fluorocarbon toxicity testing, is underway in the USA, Europe and Japan. The refrigerants under test to date include R134a, R123, R141b, R124, R125, R225ca/cb and R32. The article reports details of the almost completed tests on R134a and R123. These have been compared with R12 and R11 respectively which they are intended to replace. The testing programs cover acute toxicity in short-term exposure, carcinogenic effects on genetic material, sub-chronic toxicity, developmental toxicity teratology, and chronic toxicity carcinogenicity. These have been completed for R134a and all but the very long-term tests have been completed for R123. Both substitutes are reported to be safe for their intended use and have safety characteristics generally similar to the refrigerants they replace. D.W.H.
