How to avoid explosions when transferring liquid refrigerants.

Summary

When using a liquid pump for the rapid transfer of liquid refrigerant several points must be noted. Liquid pumps will be damaged if allowed to pump vapour for extended periods due to cavitation and lack of lubrication. If insufficient attention is paid to heat dissipation the pressure may rise to danger levels. Above all, if a pump is closed off by isolating valves when full of liquid, thermal expansion is likely to produce rupture conditions. It is essential therefore that a safety relief valve is fitted, with a safety vent to atmosphere. The article gives recommendations for correct pump installation and operation, including choice of relief valve and settings. D.W.H.
