Summary

A refrigerant liquid pump is necessary for speed transfer of liquid refrigerant from systems of over about 14 kg of refrigerant charge, or for transfer from cylinder to cylinder. A gear pump is preferred although centrifugal and vane pumps having more than six vanes have been used. It is imperative to minimize pressure loss on the pump suction side to avoid vapour formation. Vapour may lock the line, cause cavitation and other wear. Pump inlet should be as far as possible below the liquid level in the system to produce a positive suction head. Isolating valves should be ball valves of ample size. There must be minimum obstruction from the sight glass and other fittings. The suction pipe must be short and of a large bore. A vapour vent from the end point back to the system being emptied will speed transfer by a factor of about two. A safety valve is necessary to avoid an explosion due to thermal expansion of trapped liquid. D.W.H.
