Summary

This report covers the relationship between foodstuff trade and ionizing irradiation (definition of problems, comparison of ionizing irradiation with other treatments: fumigation, controlled atmosphere, chilling, freezing and heat treatment). In this context, foodstuffs are classified as follows: fruit and vegetables; seeds, cereals, spices and dried products; meat, poultry, fish and seafood. The report also describes how ionizing irradiation takes place within the food distribution chain. Future perspectives are outlined, along with possible regulations.
