IMPLICATIONS OF TRADE IN CHILLED OR FROZEN FOOD AND OF COLD STORAGE INVESTMENT FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES.

Author(s) : SCHUG W.

Summary

EXPORTS OF CHILLED OR FROZEN FOOD FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES TO INDUSTRIALIZED AREAS WILL BE A WAY TO MEET THE DEVELOPMENT OF MARKETS IN HIGH INCOME COUNTRIES AS WELL AS THE NEED FOR VERTICAL DIVERSIFICATION IN SELECTED COUNTRIES OF THE THIRD WORLD. THE CHANCE TO TAKE PART IN THIS SPECIAL TRADE DEPENDS ON THE DEVELOPMENT STAGE OF THE EXPORT COUNTRIES. THERE ARE SUBSTANTIAL BENEFITS OF TRADE IN CHILLED OR FROZEN FOOD AS WELL AS OF COLD STORAGE INVESTMENT FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. THE FOOD SUPPLY IMPROVES BY REDUCTION OF LOSSES AND BY PROGRESS IN PROCESSING. ON THE OTHER HAND, ENERGY, KNOW-HOW, CAPACITY OF STORAGE INFRASTRUCTURE, AND INVESTMENT, ARE LIMITATING FACTORS. A PROMISING STRATEGY SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON FRUIT AND VEGETABLES, FISH AND FISHERY PRODUCTS AND MEAT. IN ADDITION, THE SUPPORT OF THE MARKETING ENTRY MUST INCLUDE A CAREFUL AND LONG-LASTING PROGRAM OF SALES PROMOTION.
