REFRIGERATION OF FISHERY PRODUCTS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES.

Author(s) : LISAC H.

Summary

OF THE TOTAL OF 80 MILLION TONS OF FISHERY PRODUCTS LANDED IN THE WORLD IN 1984, NEARLY 50% WERE FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. OF THESE AN EQUIVALENT VALUE OF 38% OF THE VALUE OF THE TOTAL WORLD EXPORTS OF THE COMMODITY WAS EXPORTED. NEARLY ALL OF THE 40 MILLION TONS SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED TREATMENT WITH REFRIGERATION. UNFORTUNATELY, THE REFRIGERATION HAS BEEN APPLIED TO ONLY A SMALLPART OF FISHERY PRODUCTS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. IT WAS NOT USED FOR THE BULK OF PRODUCTS TO BE UTILIZED FOR LOCAL CONSUMPTION. SOME OF THE REASONS FOR INADEQUATE USAGE OF REFRIGERATION DISCUSSED IN THE PAPER ARE: NEED FOR MORE REFRIGERATION IN THE TROPICS THAN IN THE MODERATE CLIMATES ; DEFICIENT CONDITIONS OF THE TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE NETWORK ; LACK OF SKILL ; A DEFICIT OF REFRIGERATION CAPACITIES WHICH STIMULATES THE USAGE OF THE CAPACITIES FOR OTHER PURPOSES WHICH ARE MORE LUCRATIVE ; LOW AVAILABILITY OF TROPICALIZED REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT ; COUNTRIES.
