REFRIGERATION IN THE WORLD.

Author(s) : LORENTZEN G.

Summary

WHILE THE YEARLY INVESTMENTIN MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT MAY APPROACH THE ORDER OF 100 BILLION US DOLLARS, THE VALUE OF PRODUCTS TREATED BY LOW TEMPERATURES IS PERHAPS TEN TIMES THIS AMOUNT. THE IMPORTANCE IS BOUND TO INCREASE FURTHER IN THE YEARS TO COME TO SOLVE TWO MAJOR PROBLEMS OF THE FUTURE: THE SUPPLY OF FOOD AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW ENERGY SOURCES. REFRIGERATION CONSTITUTES A MAJOR MEANS OF CONSERVATION OF PERISHABLE FOODS WIDELY APPLIED IN THE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES. IN THE < THIRD WORLD > THEIR USE IS MAINLY LIMITED TO EXPORT PRODUCTS AND COVERING THE NEEDS OF THE WELL-TO-DO PART OF THE POPULATION. THERE IS A PRESSING NEED FOR SIMPLE AND INEXPENSIVE COOLING METHODS FOR EFFICIENT LOW COST MASS PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION UNDER MORE PRIMITIVE CONDITIONS. THE FUTURE ALSO DEPENDS ON THE AVAILABILITY OF SUFFICIENT ENERGY. NEW ENERGY SOURCES HAVE TO BE COMMISSIONED, SUCH AS NUCLEAR FUSION FOR WHICH REFRIGERATION TECHNOLOGY WILL PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART.
