IMPROVED SULPHUR DIOXIDE FUMIGATION PRACTICES FOR COLD-STORED TABLE GRAPES.

Author(s) : HARVEY J. M.

Summary

THE EFFICIENCY OF THE TREATMENT DEPENDS ON THE PACKAGING MATERIAL. FUMIGATIONS HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED OVER SOME YEARS FOR GRAPES IN FIBERBOARD OR WOOD-KRAFT-VENEER BOXES (WKV). WHEN THE GRAPES WERE PLACED IN POLYSTYRENE BOXES (EPF), THE ABSORPTION OF SULPHUR DIOXIDE WAS 50% LOWER, WHEREAS IN FIBERBOARD BOXES, ABSORPTION WAS 50% HIGHER THAN IN WKV BOXES. FUMIGATION DOSAGES WERE ADJUSTED IN ORDER TO OBTAIN COMPARABLE CONCENTRATION-TIME VALUES. FREE SULPHUR DIOXIDE RESIDUES IN TREATED GRAPES WERE NOT VERY DIFFERENT ACCORDING TO DOSAGES (0.11 TO 0.13 PPM), TOTAL SULPHUR DIOXIDE RESIDUESWERE 2.3 PPM IN GRAPES PACKED IN WKV BOXES, 1.8 PPM IN EPF BOXES AND 1.0 PPM IN FIBERBOARD BOXES WHICH WERE WELL BELOW THE SUGGESTED TOLERANCE OF 10.0 PPM.
