Increasing the air separation units (ASU) controllability by the use of dynamic modeling & simulation.

Author(s) : NIJSING J. A. R.

Summary

Where air separation units in the past mostly operated under fairly stable conditions, the market nowadays demands for a more flexible unit operation. In particular air separation units which are integrated to the clients's process can be subject to large and fast load variations. Consequently, such units must have an increased controllability (design consideration) and be supplied with an adapted control strategy (control consideration). The tightly integrated unit flowsheet and the process' physical nature result in a highly non-linear constrained multivariable system. When the client's product demand varies fastly, classic plant design and mono-variable PID controllers hardly permit to maintain the product compositions. In the paper the author presents how the air separation units controllability can be increased through the use of rigorous dynamic process models.
