Summary
Most ice slurry applications so far have been for temperatures a few degrees below 0°C while an ongoing EU project, ICE-COOL, studies ice slurry properties for freezer applications between -25 and -35 °C. This paper also considers an intermediate temperature application for ice rinks. The properties of (two-phase) ice slurry of aqueous solutions very much depend on the ice concentration obtained at various temperatures below the freezing point. Some equations may be used to predict other ice slurry properties. Thomas equation is often used for viscosity and mixing equations are used for density and thermal conductivity. The paper gives charts that show how the mentioned properties vary for cooling, ice rink and freezer temperatures. The viscosity of the ice slurry increases with ice concentration and with lower temperature applications. The density of the ice slurry will be lower while the thermal conductivity is higher with increased ice concentration. This influence will be less strong at lower temperatures where the increase of ice concentration is slower.
