Summary

The general pattern of domestic trade in the South Pacific island countries has shown comparatively little change over the past few decades. It mainly comprises the carriage of general cargoes (principally foodstuffs and fuel) from urban centres to outlying areas and islands, with return cargoes of agricultural produce, such as copra, fruits and fish for the urban and export markets. The paper considers the following areas: changes in shipping technology, problems and constraints; some aspects of ship design and operation, operating costs, cargo handling, safety, ship design, and operation of shipping services; the appropriateness of current technology; and concludes with the importance of planning and development of inter-island shipping.
