Summary

The cooling performance of three package designs for citrus fruit is evaluated, both experimentally and numerically, i.e., with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The accuracy of the CFD simulations is confirmed by the good agreement with experimental data. With respect to cooling performance, the standard container is clearly the worst. The best performance is found for the Ecopack container, although little difference with the Supervent container is present. With respect to uniformity of cooling of the oranges, in a specific container and between different containers on the pallet, the Ecopack container performs best, followed by the Supervent and the standard container. Clear improvements in container design are found in this study, leading to a decrease in cooling time and an improvement of the throughput and fruit quality. A particular advantage of CFD modelling is that the heterogeneity in cooling behaviour could be assessed in detail.
