Summary

Solar heat pump, which is advantageous in efficiently using solar energy, can even amplify the solar heating capacity due to the heat pump effect. In addition, it can effectively combine the solar harvesting and the auxiliary energy supplying together, and ensure a steady heating supplying process without worrying the variation of solar radiation. Considering the cold environment conditions in winter season, ammonia-water absorption heat pump is normally preferred, such as the units from BOSCH, ROBUR and VICOT. However, for solar heating application, it is somewhat difficult to effect the thermally driven heat pump cycle using the common non-concentrated solar collector, such as flat plate or evacuate glass tube collectors. Even the concentrated solar collector, like trough solar collector, can not ensure a long time steady operation, due to the requirements for high temperature level of the conventional NH3-H2O absorption heat pump cycle. The solar fraction for heating is not high, as more auxiliary energy will be consumed. To make the solar heat pump more competitive, it is a must to improve the solar fraction by lowering the strict requirement for temperature level, and having the medium or low temperature solar collector contribute more to heat pump cycle.
