Summary
In February 1997, five official standards for the detection of irradiated foods were published by the European Standardization Committee in all the member states of the European Community. In the near future, the standardization of other methods, less specific than reference methods but easier and cheaper to perform, should allow prior screening of samples. Under these conditions, only those which are thought to be irradiated will be re-analyzed using a reference method.
