Is vitrification sufficient to preserve liposomes during freeze-drying?

Author(s) : CROWE J. H., LESLIE S. B., CROWE L. M.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The authors show that vitrification is indeed necessary. However, dextran preserves dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine liposomes only when extremely large quantities of the dextran are added. They conclude that while vitrification may be required it is not in itself sufficient to preserve freeze-dried liposomes.
