Laboratory evaluations of ozone as a scale inhibitor for use in open recirculating cooling systems.

Summary

A pilot cooling tower apparatus that closely simulates the operations of a typical light industrial water system and a heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system was set up to study the scaling of heat transfer tubes in the presence of 0.1 part per million of ozone concentration. Runs were made with runtimes ranging from 432 to 1,800 hours. It was determined that at a 0.1 part per million ozone concentration level, ozone does not have much effect on the scaling behaviour of heat exchanger copper tubes. The traditional forces that cause scaling are still the dominant factors regardless of whether ozone (at a 0.1 part per million level) is present or not.
