Laboratory experiments on the performance of CO2 and HCFC-22 reversible heat pumps for residential use: preliminary results.

Summary

A CO2 prototype unit is compared to a conventional R22 unit, both in heating and cooling mode. The overall system efficiency of the CO2 system in terms of COP is competitive to that of the R22 system in both modes of operation. The CO2 heat exchanger design concept is described. Water retention has been a problem. The CO2 compressor has not performed optimally in some of the experiments, owing to poor lubrication. Considerable improvement in the CO2 system have to be made.
