Summary
Points out that although cooling towers are normally the cause of larger outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease, the domestic potable water supply, particularly hot water systems in large buildings, are linked with the majority of cases of Legionnaires' disease. Lists known sources of legionellosis. Describes legionellae and associated organisms. Treats thermal inactivation of legionellae and the effect of ultraviolet light. Notes the use of trace heating elements to control legionellae in dead legs. Points out that one of the most effective and simplest methods of controlling legionellae in dead legs is regular usage of the associated outlet. Quotes findings with showers to this effect. Notes that automatic drain valves are ineffective against legionellae colonising showers. Concludes by examining the efficacy of hyperchlorination of shower heads.
