Life-cycle analysis: first stage in the development of new-eco-tools for air-conditioning systems designers.

Summary

This paper presents the main results of life cycle analysis (LCA) applied to a room air cooler (cassette) and a heat pump: LCA reveals that the working phase (use of fluids and energy) is the major source of impact on direct and indirect greenhouse effects; when the leak rate is under control, energy consumption becomes the main environmental issue in terms of greenhouse effect. It was demonstrated that LCA is a reliable tool. Still, it is a complex one for designers, due to product complexity (numerous components and several parameters to be considered). The next phase will be to process data collected to develop efficient eco-tools for designers. This is what the authors have started to work on.
