Author(s) : ROBERTS D.

Type of article: Article

Summary

In the late 1980s the United Kingdom saw a sharp increase in the number of reports of cases of human listeriosis and also of the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a wide variety of foods. Public concern was raised, there were some rather "hysterical" items in the media, action was, therefore, taken by the Government. Three areas are examined in this short review: a) the recent pattern of human listeriosis in the UK; b) the occurrence of L. monocytogenes in foods; and c) the response by Government and the food industry.
