Summary

LNG liquefaction cycles are very efficient in converting natural gas into liquid for transportation to a distant customer. For large LNG plants, more than 90% of the feed heating value is in the product LNG. Chemical conversion of natural gas into liquid fuel is far less efficient, with approximately 65% of the feed heating value in the liquid product. The propane pre-cooled, mixed refrigerant cycle has been the baseload LNG cycle of choice since the early 70's, and is employed in more than 90% of the world's baseload LNG capacity. It evolved as a very cost effective, efficient hybrid of the traditional cascade cycle and the mixed refrigerant cycle. The performance of several liquefaction process cycles is compared on a lost work basis. The breakdown of lost work for each cycle is presented and analysed. The paper identifies the technical tradeoffs and shows where future efforts can be directed to improve process performance most significantly.
