Long-term issues in selection of refrigerants for the future.

Summary

The article is an update of an article already published (see IIR Bulletin 96.6, 96-3256). The refrigeration and air-conditioning industry has already got the skills and know-how to use long-term options like R134a and R404A. For competent workers, these refrigerants are the CFC lookalike handling options. The thermodynamic characteristics of ammonia and hydrocarbons allow them to play a role in very specific applications of the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry such as industrial refrigeration. Training of contractors is needed, most of them have been using only CFCs and copper tubing for the last 50 years: ammonia is not compatible with copper. However, for safety reasons, they do not seem to be the optimum option for the other applications where risk management may not be possible: lack of skills and know-how.
