Low charge ammonia chiller units for air conditioning and commercial refrigeration.

Author(s) : IEA HPC, ROLFSMAN L.

Summary

The introduction of ammonia as a working fluid in commercial applications such as comfort air conditioning and cooling/freezing in supermarkets is hampered by a number of barriers. These barriers are mainly connected to fear (safety hazard), costs, lack of technology and lack of general knowledge on the use of ammonia as a working fluid. The paper highlights these barriers further and indicates ways to overcome them. It continues with a brief statement on the current level of (larger) ammonia systems and closes with an application example of an ammonia system with CO2 as secondary refrigerant.
