Summary

Due to the recent F-gas regulation, today's conventional refrigerants for refrigeration are no longer a long term choices any more. The most used refrigerant R404A is banned from new systems and from service use from 2020 forward. In addition the availability of the refrigerants measured in term of CO2 equivalent will decrease by 79% by 2030. Hence, the refrigerant industry is forced to look for low global warming potential (GWP) alternatives to meet this challenging target. Some alternatives like R407A, R407F and R744 (CO2) have been introduced recently. Others HFO blends candidates like R448A, R449A, R450A, R513A and R290 are under qualification while others such as HDR110, L40, DR3, XL40 and ARM20 are under development. This paper assesses some of these refrigerants; it gives an overview of refrigerant alternatives and their effect on the scroll compressor design and on the application limits while considering the safety aspect as well.
