Summary

Plants were exposed to night temperatures of 5 °C during 12 hours for 7 days in two vegetative and two reproductive stages of development. The cold treatment caused leaf blade thickening and plant growth decrease in both cultivars, mainly in the vegetative stages. As regards to the reproductive stages, cv. Milionário showed higher cold sensitivity. The non-reducing sugar levels had a higher increase in the cv. Vermelho, thus providing evidence of its greater cold tolerance.
