Lubricant developments for ammonia refrigeration.

Author(s) : SPENCE B., WATSON M.

Summary

Hydrotreated mineral oils, polyalphaolefins and polyglycols are replacing traditional naphthenic and paraffinic mineral oils. These modern lubricants offer performance advantages such as improved heat transfer, energy efficiency, improved low temperature properties, lubricant longevity and greater flexibility in system design. In particular, the use of highly customized polyglycols has facilitated the use of direct expansion evaporators with ammonia. These lubricant options allow the user to select particular performance characteristics for the system in question.
