European developments in substituting CFC and HCFC refrigerants.
Author(s) : KRUSE H.
Summary
The current issues of ozone depletion and global warming have led to a great deal of research in refrigerants. Apart from CFC substitutes with similar chemistry (HCFCs and HFCs), the use of so-called natural fluids, including water, air, CO2, hydrocarbons and ammonia is being studied. Hydrocarbon refrigerators are increasingly common in Europe, particularly in Germany, whereas ammonia and CO2 are oriented more toward larger plants. A vast change is under way.
