Lubricant impact on elastomers in ammonia refrigeration systems.

Summary

The integrity of elastomeric seals is crucial for the long term reliable operation of ammonia refrigeration systems. Ammonia and lubricant both come into contact with the elastomers and can have a significant impact on their performance. Different types of lubricants are often used throughout the life of a system, which also can impact elastomer integrity. The work describes high temperature, short term tests, conducted in an ammonia environment, designed to evaluate the compatibility of various types of elastomers with lubricants of different chemistry. Elastomers were compressed during the tests to simulate actual operating conditions.
