Summary
CASES ARE REPORTED FROM SOUTH AFRICA OF SULPHATE REDUCING BACTERIA DEVELOPING PROLIFICALLY IN CONDENSER WATER BOXES. A CASE DESCRIBED IS ON THE EXIT SIDE OF CONDENSER TUBES, WHERE TUBERCLES, SOME 10 TO 20 MM IN HEIGHT, HAVE BUILT UP IN THE QUIETER EDDY AREAS OF THE TUBEPLATE. THE RESULT IS TO PRODUCE HIGH ACIDITY ROUND THE ROOT OF THE TUBES, LEADING TO HIGH GALVANIC CORROSION. THE WORST CASES APPEAR WHERE UNTREATED BORE WATER HAS BEEN USED FOR TOWER MAKE-UP. TREATMENT IS DIFFICULT. SOME BIOCIDES MAY EVEN NOURISH THE BACTERIA. FREQUENT CLEANING SEEMS THE ONLY SIMPLE ANSWER. D.W.H.
