Summary

The failure of a cupro-nickel tubed condenser unit is described. The unit was part of a ship's air conditioning system and coolant was estuarine water. Failure occurred four months after the system was commissioned. The condensers were found to be corroded at the end sheets and in the tubes. There was a considerable amount of deposit in the tubes and it is thought that localised attack enhanced by bacterial activity under debris was the cause of tube failure.
