Modelling and experimental verification of snow production within a closed space: application within the Jules Verne climatic wind tunnel.

Summary

With the Jules Verne climatic wind tunnel, all the natural climatic elements such as rain, snow, sun, sand, fog or freezing fog are reproduced either alone or in combination for various tests. Snow is produced by "snow guns" that project compressed cold air and water in the ambient air of the wind tunnel. A theoretical study of droplets ballistic behaviour and freezing allows to try to model what happens in the experimental test chamber. Many parameters (temperature, moisture content, wind speed) were studied. The variation of test conditions (climatic parameters and air/water pressure at the inlet of the gun) allows to produce different qualities of snow. The comparison between model and tests shows some differences, especially for the small droplets behaviour.
