Modified atmosphere packaging of diploid bananas (Musa AA).

Author(s) : WEI Y., THOMPSON A. K.

Summary

Apple bananas (Musa AA) are increasingly being imported into Europe by air freight. This transport method is expensive and is limiting market development so this study was carried out to determine whether it might be possible to store them for a long enough period to allow them to be exported by sea freight. Packaging fruit in polyethylene film and storage at 13 to 14 deg C gave them a similar storage life to that achieved commercially for Cavendish (Musa AAA). However, if the film was insufficiently permeable, the levels of carbon dioxide which accumulated could prove toxic to the fruit. With an appropriate harvest maturity, packing and storage conditions, it proved theoretically possible to store the fruit for long enough to enable them to be transported by sea freight.
