Summary

Ripening of these tomatoes was delayed for 1 week under ambient conditions (29-33 deg C) in 0.05 mm polyethylene (PE) bags with zero to 4 pinholes for gas diffusion, maintaining high CO2 (7-12%) and low O2 (2-7%) concentrations. Effects of increasing holes, scrubbing CO2 and ethylene are described. The ripening of tomatoes transported in wooden crates of 25-27 kg capacity from Northern Mindanao to Los Baños, Luzon was retarded when the crates were lined with 0.05 mm PE bags having 24 diffusion holes. When the PE bag lining was completely sealed, ripening was also retarded but disease incidence was high. The fruits ripened normally upon transfer to air.
