Mortality and cancer morbidity of production workers in the United Kingdom flexible polyurethane foam industry.

Summary
The study was performed in order to describe cause mortality and cancer morbidity according to the localization, as well as the role professional factors played (especially the exposure to diisocyanates) on the health of 8,288 workers in 11 British and Welsh factories, employed for at least 6 months between 1958 and 1979. Results show that cancer rates in this group are lower than the rates observed in the overall population. Moreover, all higher cancer rates (pancreas, lung, kidney, and larynx) seen in women, and corresponding to a localization known for being associated to smoking appear to be due to a combination of smoking and chance and other factors unrelated to the industrial sector studied here.
