Cancer incidence and mortality in the Swedish polyurethane foam manufacturing industry.

Type of article: Article
Summary
The idea behind the study is to look for cancer risks in Swedish polyurethane foam production workers, exposed to toluylene diisocyanate and diphenylmethane diisocyanate (TDI and MDI) at concentrations often encountered on the market. The main observation of this study is that a high, but statistically insignificant, risk of rectal cancer and of non-Hodgkins lymphome exists which increases after a latent period of 10 years of known exposure to those chemicals. This study calls for further investigation over a longer period of time because of the relatively young age of the group studied and the short amount of time elapsed since the beginning of the exposure.
