Summary

IN ORDER TO SIMULATE TWO LIQUID LAYERS WHICH HAD A SHARP GRADIENT IN DENSITY AT THE INTERFACE WERE COMPOSED OF FRESH AND SALT WATER IN A SMALL RECTANGULAR VESSEL. THIS STRATIFIED LAYERS WERE HEATED FROM SIDE WALLS AND BOTTOM. THE FLOW PATTERNS WERE OBSERVED BY USE OF BLACK INK OR SUSPENDED ALUMINIUM POWDER. THE ROLLOVER PHENOMENA WERE CHARACTERIZED BY THE BOUNDARY LAYER FLOWS RISING ALONG THE SIDE WALLS. AS A RESULT OF ONLY SIDE HEATING, LAMINAR NATURAL CONVECTION OCCURRED IN EACH LAYER. PART OF THE BOUNDARY LAYER FLOW IN THE BOTTOM LAYER WAS SEPARATED FROM THE WALL AT THE TOP. THE EFFECT OF BOTTOM HEATING WAS EMPHASIZED BY USING A SMALL VESSEL. THE EFFECT OF MASS DIFFUSION ON ROLLOVER WAS LARGER IN THE REAL LNG TANK.
