History and synthesis of Italian and international regulations. Review of alternative refrigerants (characteristics, advantages and drawbacks, as well as their range of use): R134a, R407C, R410A, R404A, R507. According to the author, selection of the optimum solution is not easy. Many factors should be taken into account: environmental impact, efficiency, cost, ease of maintenance, effective availability of standard machines and technical assistance. The selection of refrigerant to be substituted for R22 depends on the area of application. The author provides diagrams, which indicate the refrigerant to be selected taking into account the capacity of the machine and the year considered over the 1990-2004 period. J.G.
