Summary
The paper offers a general description of the technology and the properties of a new kind of material: aerogels. The principal phases of the production process are described and a review of their physical properties is presented. Finally the paper closely examines their extraordinary thermal properties, which allow them to become, because of the reduction of production costs due to recent technological developments, the most applied insulant materials.
