Summary

This short course was held in conjunction with the 1996 Purdue University Refrigeration Conference, West Lafayette, IN, USA, and was organised by the US National Committee of the IIR and the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories. The themes were the following: fluorocarbon refrigerant alternatives: an overview of current options and issues associated with use of HFC refrigerants and mixtures; prospects for natural refrigerants; a European perspective on non-fluorocarbon alternatives and system design issues; refrigerant flammability: an update on the technical issues and industry consensus test methods; lubricant choices and lubrication design for new refrigerants; fundamentals of refrigerant mixtures and their application; system-level design consideration and tradeoffs for new refrigerants and mixtures in air-conditioning and heat pump systems. Some contributions will be abstracted in a future issue of the IIR Bulletin.
