Note on a simple, inexpensive, portable and efficient method for fish sperm cryopreservation based on portable equipment.

Summary

Experiments were carried out on the cryopreservation of the sperm of the following species: sterlet (Acipenser ruthernus), arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), brown trout (Salmon trutta), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), wels (Silurus glanis) and African catfish (Ciarias gariepinus), using one single simple freezing technique. Sperm was frozen in straws on a perforated aluminium plate placed above the surface of liquid nitrogen. Frozen samples were stored in liquid nitrogen until the evaluation of motility. Temperature and duration of freezing were optimized on the basis of post-thaw motility. High post-thaw motility (30-60% of control), securing fertility, was detected in all species involved. This simple, inexpensive and portable fish sperm freezing technique has proven to be universal and is thought to be suitable for fish farming use.
