Nutritional status of kiwifruit affects yield and fruit storage.

Summary

The nitrogen content of leaves collected in summer was positively correlated with the percentage of unmarketable fruits that developed during storage at -0.5 to -0.8 deg C. In a second study, the percentage of unmarketable fruits was positively correlated with the rate of nitrogen fertilizer applied and with fruit nitrogen/calcium and nitrogen + potassium/calcium ratios at harvest. After 14 weeks of storage, firm fruits had significantly higher calcium and magnesium concentrations and higher Brix values than soft fruits.
