Summary

THE MODES OF ACTION AND THE EFFECT OF 3 FACTORS, TEMPERATURE, ETHYLENE AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY, ON THE GREEN LIFE OF BANANA AND THE RIPENING CONTROL ARE REPORTED GENERALLY. FUNGAL DEVELOPMENT IS ALSO CONSIDERED. THE KNOWLEDGE OF THESE FACTORS IS HOWEVER USELESS IF NO ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO CONDITIONING, SUCCESSIVE HANDLING PROCESSES, COOLING DOWN OR RIPENING. THE POSTHARVEST CIRCUIT SHOULD BE OPTIMIZED IN THE SHORT TERM IN ORDER TO WARRANT THE REQUIRED CRITERIA OF FRUIT QUALITY AND BATCH HOMOGENEITY IN THE OVERALL DISTRIBUTION CIRCUIT.
