Summary
Indoor air quality was studied in a totally closed hall, dedicated to aerobic composting of various organic wastes. The results show that the concentrations of volatile organic compounds were relatively low. Only limonin concentrations were high, but still remained lower than the Danish limiting values. Similarly, hydrogen sulphide concentrations were much lower than the limiting values. The total number of colonies of bacteria and gram negative bacteria exceeded the recommended Danish value of 10,000 ufc/m3 in the indoor air of a working room. Moreover, the number of fungi, of the species Aspergillus and Penicillium, as potential causes of breathing problems, were close to the dangerous exposure level.
