Summary

DIFFERENT KIND OF EQUIPMENT IS USED TO OBTAIN AUTOMATIC OIL RETURN FROM FLOODED EVAPORATORS. SOMETIMES IT IS PRACTICAL JUST TO OPERATE ONE EVAPORATOR OR ONE OR MORE EVAPORATOR COILS WITH DRY EXPANSION, AND WITH LIQUID FEED FROM THE LOW PRESSURE SEPARATOR. MORE COMMONLY THE REFRIGERANT IS EVAPORATED IN A SEPARATE HEAT EXCHANGER, USING THE WARM CONDENSATE FOR THE EVAPORATION. THE NEEDED CAPACITY OF THE OIL RETURN SYSTEM IS CALCULATED BY A SIMPLE MASS BALANCE ON THE OIL FLOW IN THE SYSTEM. THE INTENDED OIL CONCENTRATION IN THE EVAPORATOR MAY BE 2-4% (BY WEIGHT) IN PLATE TYPE EVAPORATORS WITH VERTICAL CHANNELS AND HORIZONTAL SHELL AND TUBE EVAPORATORS RESPECTIVELY. WHILE SERPENTINE COIL EVAPORATORS RATHER SHOULD BE DESIGNED FOR INSIGNIFICANT OIL CONTENT. AN ITERATION PROCEDURE FOR THE DIMENSIONING OF HELICAL COILHEAT EXCHANGERS IS PRESENTED.
